Setting Up Your Screen Printing Shop

Chapter 2

Space, Equipment and Essentials

Create a productive workspace

A well-organized screen printing shop helps you work more efficiently, maintain consistent quality and produce prints safely. Whether you’re setting up a small shop or expanding your current operation, understanding the key areas and equipment you need is the first step to success.

1. Artwork & Prep Area

Set up a clean, organized space for design, separating colors and preparing films. Good lighting and a computer with design software are essential.

2. Ink & Supplies Storage

Keep inks, chemicals, emulsions, screens and other supplies organized and properly stored. Maintain a clean, temperature-controlled area when possible.

3. Printing Press

Choose a manual or automatic press based on your production needs. Make sure you have enough space around the press for operators and good workflow.

4. Washout Area

Set up a dedicated washout area with proper lighting, water supply and drainage. A clean washout booth helps extend the life of your screens.

5. Drying & Curing

Use flash units or conveyor dryers to properly dry and cure ink. Adequate ventilation and electrical supply are important for safe and consistent curing.

6. Finishing & Packing

Have a dedicated area for inspecting prints, folding garments and preparing orders. Keep this area clean and organized to maintain quality and efficiency.

Quick Fact

A well-planned layout improves workflow, reduces mistakes and helps you grow your production capacity as your business expands.

Dynamic Perspective

You don’t need a huge space to be successful. Focus on a functional layout, quality equipment and a clean, organized work environment. Start with the essentials and add equipment as your skills and business grow.

Create a workspace for consistent, high-quality results

A well-planned shop layout helps you work more efficiently, produce better prints and keep your equipment and screens in great condition. Separating work areas, maintaining proper lighting and ventilation, and keeping your space organized will improve workflow, reduce problems and make production more enjoyable.

Six screen printing workspace areas: screen room, washout and reclaim, printing, curing, storage, and utilities, ventilation and safety.

1. Screen Room / UV-Safe Area

Prepare and store your screens in a clean, dry area with controlled lighting. Use yellow or UV-safe lighting to prevent premature exposure of emulsion. Keep this area separate from washout and printing areas.

2. Wet Area – Washout & Reclaim

Designate a wet area for washing out and reclaiming screens. Use a sink or washout booth with proper plumbing and drainage. Keep this area separated from the screen room and printing area to avoid contamination.

3. Printing Area

Set up your press with enough space for loading, printing and unloading garments. Keep inks, supplies and tools within easy reach. Maintain a clean and organized area to improve efficiency and consistency.

4. Curing Area

Use a flash unit or conveyor dryer to cure your inks at the manufacturer’s recommended temperature, time and method. Proper curing ensures washability, durability and consistent color.

5. Storage & Organization

Keep inks, chemicals, screens, squeegees, pallets and other supplies organized and properly stored. Label materials and maintain a clean inventory area to save time and keep your shop running smoothly.

6. Utilities, Ventilation & Safety

Ensure you have adequate electrical service, ventilation and temperature control. Follow all safety guidelines, use proper PPE and keep your workspace clean to protect yourself and your equipment.

Screen preparation workflow

A step-by-step process from coating to a ready-to-print screen.

Five-step screen preparation workflow: clean and degrease, coat with emulsion, dry, expose, and washout and inspect.

1. Clean & Degrease

Remove all dirt, oils and contaminants. A clean screen helps the emulsion adhere properly.

2. Coat with Emulsion

Use the correct emulsion and coating technique for even coverage.

3. Dry

Dry in a clean, dust-free area with proper airflow. Screens must be completely dry before exposure.

4. Expose

Expose using the correct exposure time based on your emulsion, mesh and light source.

5. Washout & Inspect

Wash out the design, allow to dry and inspect for quality. The screen is now ready for print production.

Pro Tip

Keep your work areas clean and organized. A well-maintained shop reduces problems, extends the life of your equipment and screens, and helps you produce consistent, high-quality prints.

Dynamic Perspective

Taking time to set up your shop correctly and following a consistent screen preparation workflow will save time, reduce wasted materials and help you achieve better results on every job.
