Production Counts and Job Planning

Chapter 3

Turn Artwork into a Print Plan

Know your total prints

Before you start setting up, calculate the total number of prints, colors and screens needed. This helps you plan your workflow, choose the right equipment and supplies, estimate time and reduce costly mistakes.

Real world example

This example shows how to calculate your total prints for a multi-location, multi-color job.

Example of 25 shirts with four front colors, five back colors and one color on each sleeve, totaling 275 prints, alongside calculation instructions.

25 shirts × 11 colors = 275 total prints.

Print location Shirts Colors Total prints
Front 25 4 100
Back 25 5 125
Left sleeve 25 1 25
Right sleeve 25 1 25
Totals 25 11 275

How to calculate

  1. Determine the number of shirts.
  2. Identify each print location (front, back, sleeves, etc.).
  3. Count the number of colors for each location.
  4. Multiply shirts × colors for each location.
  5. Add all locations together to get the total number of prints.

Plan the job

Three job-planning steps: determine print locations, calculate 25 shirts times 11 colors for 275 prints, and plan screens, ink, press setup and production time.

1. Determine Print Locations

Identify where each design will be printed and how many colors are in each location.

2. Calculate Total Prints

Add up the total prints for all locations. This example requires 275 total prints to complete the job.

3. Plan Your Resources

  • Prepare the correct number of screens.
  • Make sure you have enough ink for the job.
  • Plan your press setup and workflow.
  • Allow time for testing, adjustments and production.

Quick Fact

Total prints = the total number of times ink is printed on a shirt. This number helps you estimate ink usage, production time and overall job costs.

Dynamic Perspective

A little planning goes a long way. Knowing your total prints, colors and setup requirements helps you run a smoother, more efficient production, reduce waste and deliver high-quality prints on time, every time.
