Chapter 11
Get Accurate, Consistent Results
A proper setup makes the difference
Correctly setting up your press and registering your screens is essential for producing high-quality, consistent prints. A well-aligned press reduces waste, speeds up production and ensures your multi-color designs print accurately every time.

The press setup and registration process

1. Level your press
Make sure your press is level front to back and side to side. A level press ensures even ink deposit and consistent print quality.
2. Install your screens
Secure your screens in the press. Ensure they are straight, properly tensioned and at the correct angle for your press and ink.
3. Set off contact
Adjust the off contact to allow the screen to release cleanly from the garment. Typical off contact is 1/16″ to 1/8″ depending on the mesh and garment.
4. Register your screens
Use registration marks and micro adjustments to align each color. Check alignment on the platen before printing your full run.
5. Test print and adjust
Do a test print to confirm registration, ink coverage and print quality. Make any final adjustments before running your production.
6. Maintain your setup
During production, periodically check registration, tighten hardware and clean ink build-up to keep your setup accurate and consistent.
Key Tips
- Use registration marks for consistent alignment.
- Keep a test garment for reference.
- Check screen tension regularly.
- Maintain proper off contact for clean prints.
- Clean screens and platens during production.
- Record your settings for repeat jobs.
Pro Tip
Create a setup checklist for each job, including screen order, off contact settings and registration notes. This helps you save time and ensures consistent results, especially for repeat orders.
