Flashing, Curing & Dryer Setup

Chapter 13

Control Heat for Better, Longer-Lasting Prints

Proper heat settings improve quality and durability

Flashing and curing are critical steps in screen printing. Proper temperature, time and distance help you achieve bright colors, good adhesion and long-lasting prints. Whether you use a flash unit or conveyor dryer, always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for your inks and garments.

Flashing, curing and dryer setup steps

Six heat setup steps: set flash unit temperature, check distance, flash until tacky dry, set conveyor dryer temperature, adjust belt speed and verify cure.

1. Set flash unit temperature

Set the flash unit to the correct temperature for your ink and garment type. Typical flash temperatures are 280°F–320°F, but always follow your ink manufacturer’s guidelines.

2. Check distance

Maintain the proper distance between the flash unit and garment. Typical distance is 1″ to 3″, depending on the equipment and fabric. Too close can scorch garments, and too far may not flash properly.

3. Flash until tacky dry

Flash the underbase or previous color until it is tacky dry. The ink should be dry to the touch but still slightly tacky to allow the next color to bond. Avoid over-flashing, which can cause poor adhesion or color issues.

4. Set conveyor dryer temperature

Set your conveyor dryer to the recommended temperature for your ink. Most plastisol inks cure at 320°F–330°F (surface temperature). Always follow the ink manufacturer’s TDS for exact curing requirements.

5. Adjust belt speed

Adjust the conveyor belt speed to allow the ink to reach the proper cure temperature. Belt speed will vary based on dryer model, wattage, number of panels and ink type.

6. Verify cure

Verify the ink is fully cured by checking the surface temperature with an infrared thermometer or by completing wash and stretch tests. Proper curing ensures durability, washability and the best performance from your inks.

Key Tips

  • Always follow the ink manufacturer’s temperature and time guidelines.
  • Flash only until tacky dry, do not over-flash.
  • Maintain proper distance and belt speed for consistent results.
  • Use an infrared thermometer to verify cure temperature.
  • Ensure even heat across the platen or conveyor.
  • Test prints for wash and stretch to confirm durability.

Pro Tip

Every press, flash unit and dryer is different. Do a test print and adjust temperature, distance and belt speed for your specific equipment, inks and garments. Keep a record of your settings for consistent, repeatable results.
