Is DTF Right for Your Business?
Direct-to-film production can give apparel decorators a flexible way to produce full-color transfers for cotton, polyester, blends, and many other compatible garments. It can support screen printers, embroiderers, promotional-product companies, schools, team decorators, online apparel businesses, and companies that sell transfers to other decorators.
DTF is especially useful when the work includes full-color artwork, short runs, personalization, frequent design changes, fast reprints, or garments that do not justify a separate screen-print setup. But DTF is not automatically the best answer for every order or every business.
Questions to Ask Before Shopping
- What types of garments and artwork make up our current work?
- How much transfer volume do we currently produce or outsource each month?
- How much are we spending on outsourced transfers, shipping, rush fees, and reprints?
- How quickly do customers expect orders and reprints?
- Do we have an employee who can own operation and routine maintenance?
- Can our facility support the equipment, electrical load, ventilation, and environmental controls?
- Will DTF supplement screen printing and embroidery, or become a separate transfer business?
- Is demand consistent enough to justify equipment ownership?
Quick Fact: DTF can expand the range of work a shop accepts, but the value comes from matching the process to profitable demand, not from owning the technology alone.
